Serbian scammer, luring its victims via Tinder with the username of Anabela (as a blonde girl, 27 years old), then asks victims to add her/him on Skype with the username of IL.2323 and asks for video call, after which the user uses fake cam with a prerecorded clip.

Insight from CredCheck

It sounds like you encountered a "catfishing" scam on Tinder, likely perpetrated by IL.2323 using the fake profile of Anabela. These scams create unrealistic online personas to manipulate victims. Here's what you should do:

  1. Don't Engage Further: There's no point in trying to reason with IL.2323. Simply block their Tinder profile and their Skype account (IL.2323) immediately.

  2. Report the Scam: Report Anabela's profile on Tinder as fraudulent. You can also report IL.2323's Skype account to Microsoft. Reporting helps prevent others from falling victim to this scam.

  3. Review Your Privacy Settings: On both Tinder and Skype, take a moment to review your privacy settings. Adjust them to restrict who can contact you and see your information. Consider making your profile private and only allowing matches to see your photos after you've interacted for a while.

  4. Be Cautious with Video Calls: Be wary of video calls with people you haven't known for a long time online. Scammers often use pre-recorded clips to create compromising situations. If you do choose to video chat, ensure you're in a well-lit environment and avoid showing anything private in the background.

ScamCheckup Tips

This scam highlights the importance of getting to know someone online before getting too invested. Here's a unique tip, the "Background Check Before Connect" technique, to help you avoid falling victim to similar scams in the future:

The "Background Check Before Connect" Technique:

  1. Reverse Image Search the Profile Picture: If someone you connect with online seems suspicious, especially if they seem eager for a video call, save their profile picture. Use a reverse image search tool like Google Images or TinEye (https://blog.tineye.com/category/image-search/) to upload the picture and see if it appears elsewhere online. If the picture appears on unrelated websites or stock photo sites, it's a red flag.

  2. Search for Inconsistencies: Pay attention to inconsistencies in the person's profile or communication style. Does their story seem believable? Do they avoid answering questions about themselves? If something feels off, trust your gut.

  3. Let the Conversation Flow Naturally: Don't feel pressured to rush into video calls or share personal information. A genuine connection takes time to develop. See how the conversation unfolds naturally and avoid anyone who seems overly eager or makes demands.

  4. Consider a Social Media Check (Optional): Once you've gotten to know someone online for a while and things seem promising, you might consider searching for their name on social media platforms (with their permission, of course). Having a social media presence with mutual friends or connections can add a layer of credibility.

By following the "Background Check Before Connect" technique, you can be more cautious about who you connect with online and avoid falling victim to catfishing scams. Remember, online dating can be a great way to meet people, but prioritize safety and trust your instincts.
