Insight from CredCheck

I understand you're shaken by the recent ransomware scam attempt from kelvinanalysis@zupco.co.zw. It's common to feel scared or embarrassed after encountering a sextortion scam, but it's important to know that you did the right thing by not sending money. Here's what you can do to move forward:

  • Report the Scam:

Great job reporting the scam to ScamCheckup.com. Additionally, you can report the scam to the FBI at the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://complaint.ic3.gov/. The IC3 tracks ransomware complaints and may use your information to investigate these cybercrimes.

  • Secure Your Devices:

    • Scan your devices with a reputable antivirus or anti-malware program to check for any malware or trojans.
    • Change your passwords for all your online accounts, especially your email and social media accounts. Consider using a password manager to create and store strong, unique passwords for all your accounts.
  • Be Wary of Future Scams:

These scammers often use scare tactics and pressure to make you act quickly. Remember, don't respond to threats or demands for money.

Here's what you can do specifically about the blackmail threats:

  • Don't communicate with the scammer: Further communication may encourage them to continue harassing you.
  • Report the blackmail to the platform: If you received the email on a platform like Gmail or Yahoo, report the email as spam or phishing. Most email platforms allow you to report emails directly.

It's important to remember that in most cases, the scammer doesn't actually have any compromising videos or images. They're counting on your fear and embarrassment to extort money.

ScamCheckup Tips

Ransomware and sextortion scams are unfortunately becoming more common. Here are some unique tips to help you avoid falling victim in the future:

  • Beware of Phishing Emails:

Phishing emails often contain malicious attachments or links that can download malware onto your device. Don't open attachments or click on links from unknown senders.

  • Keep Your Software Up to Date:

Outdated software can contain security vulnerabilities that scammers can exploit. Make sure your operating system, web browser, and other software are up to date with the latest security patches.

  • Be Careful What You Share Online:

Avoid sharing explicit photos or videos of yourself online, even with people you trust. Once something is online, it can be difficult to control who sees it.

  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication:

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts by requiring a second verification step, such as a code from your phone, to log in.

Here's a unique tip to avoid sextortion scams with fake videos: Scammers often bluff about having compromising videos. In some cases, the scammer may even send you a short, edited video clip that you don't recognize. If this happens, don't panic. The clip could be cleverly edited together from publicly available footage or taken from another victim. Do not respond to the scammer's threats. Report the scam and consider contacting the person in the video clip to explain the situation.

By following these tips and practicing good online security habits, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to ransomware and sextortion scams. Remember, you are not alone, and there is help available if you are targeted by a scam.
