Scam Description
I got an email from this person telling me he has a recording of me watching porn. He said if I don’t send him 950 dollars he will send the video to all my contacts.
Hey there, this sounds incredibly stressful, but know that you're not alone. This is a common scam tactic called sextortion, and it preys on fear and embarrassment. Here's what you should do:
Don't panic and don't pay. It's highly unlikely the scammer actually has a recording of you. Even if they do (which is a violation of your privacy), sending money only encourages them to keep scamming others and may not stop them from releasing the recording (even if it doesn't exist).
Stop all communication with Lane Bynes. Don't respond to any emails or threats. Scammers rely on your fear to keep you engaged. By not responding, you take away their power.
Report the scam. Forward the email from Lane Bynes to your email provider and report it as spam or phishing. You can also report the scam to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/assistant?orgcode=APPLE.
Secure your online accounts. Change the passwords for your email and any other accounts that you think may be vulnerable. Consider enabling two-factor authentication for added security. This makes it harder for scammers to access your accounts even if they get your password.
Here are some additional things to consider:
- Did you share any personal information with Lane Bynes? If so, be extra vigilant about potential identity theft. Monitor your bank accounts and credit reports for any suspicious activity.
- Do you feel comfortable talking to someone about this? Talking to a trusted friend, family member, or law enforcement officer can help alleviate some of the stress you're feeling.
Sextortion scams often rely on the victim's fear that an embarrassing video will be shared with friends and family. Here's a unique tip to help you avoid falling victim to sextortion in the future:
Be Mindful of Who You Share Private Content With:
- Limit who has access to your webcam. Disable your webcam when not in use, and be cautious about granting websites or applications permission to access it.
- Think before you share explicit photos or videos. Once you send something online, you lose control of it. Even if you trust someone now, circumstances can change.
- Be wary of online relationships that move quickly and involve exchanging intimate content. Scammers often try to build a quick rapport and pressure you into sending them compromising photos or videos.
By being mindful of what you share online and who you share it with, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to sextortion scams.
Bonus Tip: While CredCheck (https://scamcheckup.com/credcheck/) can't analyze the truthfulness of claims like having a recording, it can be helpful for identifying phishing emails. Look for inconsistencies in the sender's email address, grammatical errors, and generic threats. If the email seems suspicious, don't click on any links or attachments.
