Scam Description
I left my house and went to checkout this place in Morogbo -Agbara-Badagry. Only to find out that the address is a residential apartment in a ghetto street. I called several times, but they refused to pick up. I then decided to chat them up, and got the Payment validates order message. That’s when I knew they were a scam and contacted my friend.
That's a frustrating experience you had with the furniture seller on Facebook Marketplace. It's good you became suspicious and didn't make a payment before confirming the legitimacy of the seller. Here's what you can do to avoid similar scams in the future:
Steps to Take Now:
- Report the Seller: Report the seller's profile and any suspicious messages to Facebook Marketplace. This helps them track and remove scammers from the platform.
General Tips to Avoid Furniture Scams on Facebook Marketplace:
-
Never Pay Before Seeing the Furniture: Insist on seeing the furniture in person before making any payment. This allows you to verify its condition and ensure it's what was advertised.
-
Beware of Unrealistic Prices: If the price of the furniture seems too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers often lure victims with incredibly low prices.
-
Meet in a Public Place: Arrange to meet the seller in a well-lit, public place, ideally during the day. Take a friend with you for added security.
-
Use Facebook Pay (if available): If Facebook Pay is available in your region, consider using it for purchases as it offers some buyer protection.
-
Don't Send Money Through Money Transfer Services: Avoid sending money through Western Union, MoneyGram, or similar services for online furniture purchases. These transactions are difficult to trace and recover if scammed.
-
Search Seller's Profile: Check the seller's profile for reviews or red flags. A lack of reviews or negative feedback from other buyers can be a warning sign.
-
Consider Furniture Reputable Stores: While Facebook Marketplace can offer deals, reputable furniture stores often have better return policies and guarantees.
Searching Scammers on ScamCheckup (Optional): While searching a seller's name on https://scamcheckup.com/about-us/ won't definitively identify a scammer, it can be helpful if others have reported them. Look for similar experiences or red flags mentioned in reports.
By following these tips, you can shop more safely on Facebook Marketplace and avoid falling victim to furniture scams. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Trust your gut feeling and don't hesitate to walk away from a deal that feels suspicious.
