Scam Description
I purchased kittens or at least I thought I did. I was told the kittens would be shipped by a supposed breeder Garry Dean in Chaska MN. He told me he dropped off the kittens at the shipping company. All of sudden I start receiving emails from the shipper requesting immediate CASH pmt for a thermal crate deposit for $990 and all would be refunded upon delivery. Although the scammers can’t seem to remember what they said because in various communications, one stated 100%, 98% and 95%. I thought I was much smarter than this but I had a skip in my judgement because I wanted the kittens, so I bought into the scam and paid the $990k via zelle. Then after I paid that, then there was another emergency where the kittens required insurance to fly to due to their age. They requested another $1k for this cost and of course, like the crate deposit, I would be refunded in full upon delivery. In both cases if this was a legit company, they would have asked for a credit card NOT cash. Furthermore, the breeder, Garry Dean is probably in on it and told me they are legit and has used them for a long time. Well Garry Dean if this were the case, then why didn’t you know about the change in plans for the crate due to MN temps or the requirement for insurance. When I asked this person about it, he said he was just as surprised as me.
It sounds like you unfortunately fell victim to a pet scam involving hidden fees. While $990 is a significant loss, it's important to know you're not alone. Here's what you can do to move forward:
-
Report the Scam:
You've already reported the scam to ScamCheckup.com, which is a great first step. Additionally, you can file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov This helps the FTC track these scams and potentially take action against the perpetrators.
-
Dispute the Zelle Payment:
Contact your bank and explain the situation. Since you were scammed, see if they can help you dispute the $990 Zelle payment. There's a chance you may be able to recover the funds, especially if you can provide evidence of the scam, such as the emails you received requesting additional fees.
-
Be Wary of Future Online Pet Purchases:
When considering buying a pet online, be cautious of breeders who only accept cash payments or use money transfer services like Zelle. Reputable breeders typically accept credit cards or other secure payment methods.
-
Research Breeders Thoroughly:
Before making any purchase, research the breeder online. Look for reviews from other customers and check the breeder's website for legitimacy. Look for signs of a professional breeding operation, such as health guarantees and a focus on ethical breeding practices.
Hidden fee pet scams are unfortunately common. Here are some unique tips to avoid falling victim in the future:
-
Use Secure Payment Methods:
Only deal with breeders who accept secure payment methods like credit cards or payment processors with buyer protection policies. Avoid using cash or money transfer services like Zelle for pet purchases.
-
Beware of Shipping Fee Scams:
Legitimate breeders typically factor shipping costs into the initial adoption fee. Be wary of breeders who ask for separate fees for things like crate deposits or pet insurance after the initial purchase.
-
Consider Local Breeders:
If possible, consider adopting a pet from a local animal shelter or rescue organization. This allows you to meet the pet in person before making a commitment and avoids the risks associated with online pet purchases.
-
Video Chat with the Breeder:
A reputable breeder should be willing to video chat with you and show you the kittens you're interested in. This allows you to see the kittens and the breeder's environment.
Here's a unique tip for hidden fee pet scams: Be cautious of breeders who pressure you to act quickly. Taking time to research the breeder and ask questions is important. Legitimate breeders won't pressure you to rush into a decision.
By following these tips and being cautious when buying pets online, you can significantly reduce your risk of falling victim to hidden fee pet scams. Remember, if something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Don't be afraid to walk away from a deal that feels suspicious
